The cost of a thing is what I call life which has to be exchanged for it, immediately or in the long run.
If you want to catch something, running after it isn’t always the best way.
Bleeding ulcers run in my family, we give them to each other.
In running, I know that I can train as much as I want and Im never going to break the world record for the five miles. Its partly genetics; Im just not built for it. But if I worked really hard, I might be able to cut my time by half. Could I do the same thing with my mind and my well-being?
Time is a sandpile we run our fingers in.
And all poets love dust and mist because all the last answers. Go running back to dust and mist.
And how should a beautiful, ignorant stream of water know it heads for an early release — out across the desert, running toward the Gulf, below sea level, to murmur its lullaby, and see the Imperial Valley rise out of burning sand with cotton blossoms, wheat, watermelons, roses, how should it know?
Let a joy keep you. Reach out your hands and take it when it runs by.
And even now she beats her head against the bars in the same old way and wonders if there is a bigger place the railroads run to from Chicago where maybe there is romance and big things and real dreams that never go smash.
When we cut off access to certain parts of our cities to people on bikes or in wheelchairs, we’re not only doing economic damage, we’re also doing culture damage. New York is the culture capital of the world because people are running into each other on the street all the time. They are forced to engage in creativity and problem-solving.
I think rappers are the fall guy because some of us don’t have the wits to point the finger back. The thing is when you take a whole generation and whip them out, string the mothers out and put the fathers in jail – the reason I know respect is because my father is the mediator between me and my grandfather. I’m the mediator between my son and my father because I’m old enough to understand where my father is coming from and young enough to understand what my kid is trying to do. When you whip out the mediator the kids run wild and the old people are scared of them.
I have a loyalty that runs in my bloodstream, when I lock into someone or something, you can’t get me away from it because I commit that thoroughly. That’s in friendship, that’s a deal, that’s a commitment. Don’t give me paper – I can get the same lawyer who drew it up to break it. But if you shake my hand, that’s for life.
Postwar America was a very buttoned-up nation. Radio shows were run by censors, Presidents wore hats, ladies wore girdles. We came straight out of the blue – nobody was expecting anything like Martin and Lewis. A sexy guy and a monkey is how some people saw us.
Make film, shoot film, run film. Do something. Make film. Shoot anything.
It doesn’t happen very often that you get to work with some really good friends of yours and there’s a common language between everyone, you don’t have to explain what you’re doing, you can just run with it. It makes it just so much easier and more relaxed.
Never let an inventor run a company. You can never get him to stop tinkering and bring something to market
The Navy has a custom-if a ship runs aground, the captain is relieved regardless of who is responsible. That’s how Abu Ghraib should be handled.
We depend on this planet to eat, drink, breathe, and live. Figuring out how to keep our life support system running needs to be our number-one priority. Nothing is more important than finding a way to live together – justly, respectfully, sustainably, joyfully – on the only planet we can call home.
You cannot run a linear system on a finite planet indefinitely.
All I am certain of right now is that I don’t want to go anywhere, and that’s not bad for someone who always used to run.
Lately I’ve been running on faith.
If the poor overweight jogger only knew how far he had to run to work off the calories in a crust of bread he might find it better in terms of pound per mile to go to a massage parlor.
She thinks she knows everything that goes on inside me, and she doesn’t know a thing. What did she want from me – to tell the truth all the time? To run around saying it did matter to me that I live in a world where you can grow old and be alone and have to get down on your hands and knees and beg for friends? A place where people just sort of forget about you because you get a little old and your mind’s a bit senile or silly? Did she think that didn’t bother me underneath?
Be avid. Create apart from perfection. Risk failure. Cover your words with sweat. Run a little Touch excruciatingly. Laugh until you cry. Dance with your eyes closed. Care. Understand you die a little in every moment. Be Enlivened
Geeks run the world. Condoleezza Rice is a geek, Bill Gates is clearly a geek, many of the big filmmakers and writers are geeks, lots of military people are geeks. Anyone who has heard Donald Rumsfeld talk about military hardware knows they are in the presence of a geek.
Whenever I see a homeless guy, I always run back and give him money, because I think, ‘Oh my God, what if that was Jesus?’
I started running, and I hated it. Of course, everyone hates running for the first mile. If you’re running two miles or twenty miles, it always hurts. Now I live it. I look forward to it. It’s really good. It clears my head.
Yeah, I finished, it was hard. Those last five miles. It was like giving birth and then being told to run as you’re giving birth. It was so much pain in my hips. I don’t know if women are meant to run, especially after having kids.
You took me to adventure and to love. We two have shared great joy and great sorrow. And now I stand at the gate of the paddock watching you run in an ecstasy of freedom, knowing you will return to stand quietly, loyally, beside me.
It was easy to run around barefoot in oblivion in Costa Rica. But once I gave birth to my child, I didnt want to be oblivious to the obvious.
Navalny is a blogger-turned-activist, but he finds stuff and he puts together these very, very clever, very high production value videos which underline the corruption at the top of the system, and there are millions of people who watch them. Some people think he must have some kind of protection inside the system because he hasn’t yet been completely put out of commission; he’s allowed to go on. He himself has said he wants to run for president.
What’s interesting about Navalny is that he has run a – not so much a pro-democracy campaign in Russia, but an anti-corruption campaign. He seems to have access to quite a lot of information about very senior Russians, including Putin.
If Putin decides to run, which we are assuming that he will, there really isn’t anything that can stop him. He can manipulate the system so that he has not real opponents; he can manipulate the media so that nobody else gets any coverage. And then, if worse comes to worse, he can – as he has done in the past – just change the electoral results. So, it’s not like it’s going to be a very exciting election.
To describe Russian politics as "managed democracy" – and that’s sometimes hard for outsiders to understand, because a lot of the forms of democracy exist in Russia, so there are elections; there is a press; there is a campaign, and so on. But the outcome of the campaign is never in doubt. So the campaign is manipulated. There is a real opposition in Russia. There are one or two real opposition figures who do want to change the political system, but they will probably not be allowed to run, and one way or another they will be prevented from being on the ballot.
When you’re in a daze – whether it’s from running or a hangover or whatever else – I think that ideas from your subconscious can slip through more easily. The way that I write songs, for what its worth, when I’m playing music, if it’s good music it will bring images forward into my mind and then I’ll write down what the images are and that becomes the lyrics. I think that process is just easier if the superego has just gone away in disgust for the day.
