In my years of working in theatre and TV I’ve learnt that my main skill is not the instrumental playing but the idea of what to play and my interest for so many kinds of music. Often people ask me to contribute to projects when they don’t stay in just one genre. I feel more like a composer who just has to play his own things.

Right now, American government has stepped back from offering any kinds of protection for human rights and public health. And the fossil fuel industry thinks that they have just absolute free rein to go for it. The one thing in the way is public opposition. It’s civil society. It’s activism.

A lot of the Russian economy is built around people who are one way or another milking the state and taking money from the state and recycling it into their private bank accounts. And there are a lot of people who are taking advantage of that, so it’s not just one person. It’s a kind of web of people doing that, and that’s how the system stays in power and how people stay in control.

You could kind of be free and expressive but you already knew when you joined the internet, you knew that you should not be a troll. You began to experience the internet through platforms that were themselves controlled by specific companies, technical instruments of those companies, like search and retrieval and ordering and classification.

I am surely a feminist filmmaker, but not because I set out to become one, or am trying to make any kind of statement. Rather, it’s inherent in the act of expressing myself, as a woman who is deeply alienated from mainstream cinematic structures of seeing. I express myself and am instantly feminist.

I enjoy making music alone, and I like keeping my options open for how I release my own songs. But everybody in Grizzly Bear is full of ideas. So it’s kind of boring to come to the band with a complete song and be like: "Here’s what I want you to do." With this record, we wanted to make everything feel like everyone – music that we could never do on our own. That’s a real gift, and it’s one of the best things about being in a band like this.

I’ve had good sex with somebody and just kind of been afterward – "Wow." Once they started opening their mouth and showing their true colors and talking to them and getting to know them more and being like, "OK this is not the person I want to spend the rest of my life with." But we had fun, and that’s that.

I’ve been in a relationship for almost two years now, so I’m kind of locked in there. My mind doesn’t even really remember when I was single, to be honest.

I’m going to write what I feel like writing, which is a great place to be. But it can be hard to get there. It’s so easy to get stricken with one kind of self-consciousness or another.

Twenty years ago, when I started writing, I didn’t define myself as an African-American writer. And then you write books and you’re focused on what’s inside your books, and that kind of term is generally used on the outside, by the critical establishment.

Legal documents have mistrust written all over them. It’s unfortunate, but the human DNA is so tuned to kind of taking you for granted that we tend to protect ourselves legally. That’s why I don’t read them as, if I read them, I will go soft. To me, the human relationship is far more important than the professional bond I share with anyone.

I think Lindsay Kemp really introduced me to the work of Jean Genet, and through that, I kind of kept re-educating myself about other prose writers and poets.
